Learning about Equine Rescue

I recently had the opportunity to visit Bluemont Equine Sanctuary, and it turned out to be one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. From the moment I stepped onto the serene grounds, I was enveloped by tranquility and a deep connection with nature.

The sanctuary is in Colts Neck, NJ, and is adorned with lush green pastures and towering trees. It was a cloudy day and unseasonably cool for a June day.

As I walked along the well-maintained pathways, I was greeted by the sight of majestic horses, and mini horses grazing peacefully in the expansive fields. Each horse had a unique story, and knowing they had found refuge in this sanctuary was heartwarming.

While there I learned something that shocked me. Most horses typically have 7 homes throughout their life. I found that statistic pretty heartbreaking. Bluemont prides itself on rescuing animals from horrific conditions and providing them with a forever and final home. The compassionate staff shared tales of rescue and rehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of providing a safe haven for these magnificent creatures.

Eager to learn more, I joined a guided tour led by Carl, one of the founders of the sanctuary. He introduced us to several horses, mini horses, and donkeys and shared their individual histories. I was moved by the resilience and strength these horses displayed in overcoming their past hardships. It was evident that they had formed deep bonds with their caretakers, who showered them with love and provided expert care.

We were able to walk around and interact with the animals after our tour and I genuinely enjoyed myself. I’ve always found I am most at peace in the presence of animals. Of course, I brought my camera and snapped some people because I wanted to be able to treasure the moment.

As the day drew to a close, I sat with a friend overlooking the sanctuary, basking in the warmth of the sun which finally made an appearance. The energy of the place touched my heart, reminding me of the importance of compassion, resilience, and connection. It was not just the horses who had found sanctuary here; it was also the people who sought solace and healing in the company of these magnificent creatures.

Leaving the equine sanctuary was bittersweet. I felt a sense of gratitude for the incredible work done by the staff and volunteers who dedicated their lives to these horses' well-being. The experience instilled in me a newfound appreciation for the profound bond between humans and animals and the healing power it can bring.

I left the equine sanctuary with a renewed spirit and a commitment to support and advocate for these magnificent animals. The memories of that day will forever be etched in my heart, reminding me of the beauty and serenity that can be found in the presence of these remarkable equine beings.

I decided to plan a volunteer day with a few friends later this month, and I look forward to learning more and spending time with the animals.
